Many of you will know that I used John as the inspiration for my character Benito in Aphrodite’s Fire, since then I have considered myself honoured to have John as a friend and because I know he has some big things happening in his life I thought it would be good to do another interview with him so that you, my lovely readers can find out what the future holds for my friend. So here it is, our interview.
I hope you enjoy reading and watching. I will add media links for you all to follow John at the end of the interview.
Thanks to my fabulous internet stalking skills (and that we have known each other for a while) I know quite a bit about your working past, but for those that don’t have my skills can you tell us how you got to where you are today?
I basically started off in fitness and modeling in my late teens which kind of expanded as time went on. Along the way I was involved with some body building, professional wrestling and many different genres of modeling which included being a romance cover model. I was the most tattooed male romance cover model in the world 2013 and 2014. During my time as a male fitness model and competitor I connected with film director Jillian Bullock. She selected me for the role of United States Army Captain Jake Nixon in the upcoming movie, ‘A Sense of Purpose Fighting For Our Lives’ which is coming to theaters in November 2017.
Who have been the biggest influences on your life and the decisions you have made?
I have been blessed over the years to have had so many good people around me that I confide in for advice. To be quite honest with you SJ, if I had to say the biggest influences in my life it would have to be all those people who made it to the top of the planet who started at the ground up. Those who made it with hard work, dedication and sacrifice. They are the people who have earned respect from me and everyone all over the world.
Now you have retired from competing what does the future hold for you?
Being retired from competition now allows me to pursue acting as a full-time career. This is very exciting for me. I am very humbled and honored to say there are so many people who believe in me 100% as an actor. This includes director and producer Jillian Bullock who is one of my greatest inspirations and role models.
In your role as Captain Jake Nixon in A Sense Of Purpose, Fighting For Our Lives (view the trailer here – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TMyLz0tkHUc ) you are quite frankly bloody terrifying. Did you find it hard to get into your characters frame of mind and did you have any special tricks to help you become so horrible?
Well first of all, thank you so much for saying that as my goal is for every viewer who sees me as the evil bad guy Captain Nixon to be terrified. Viewers will hate this man because he truly is a psychopath. People who have seen me in the demo reel teaser trailer with my co-star Tamara Woods as Nixon gave me some very nice reviews which I was very proud of. One thing they all say is that the character is the 100% opposite of the real John Quinlan. In real life I am a father and a kind person. Captain Nixon’s character embodies everything that is evil. I have had training as an actor from people around me and I think the ability to become this very nasty character as soon as a director yells action comes from my days in the world famous Killer Kowalski Professional Wrestling School. I was blessed to be trained by the legendary WWE Hall of Fame wrestler Walter “Killer” Kowalski. He forced me right from the start to learn how to cut a promo in front of guys that were colossal sized intimidating human beings. In the world of pro wrestling they call it, “going into character.” Mastering this skill from Walter is something special. I am truly proud to say not only was Killer Kowalski my teacher and mentor but also my friend. Rest in peace Walter, I thank you and I will never forget you.
Now for the fun stuff…
What is the one thing you can’t live without?
My three children
Do you listen to music when you workout and if so what do you listen to?
Anything very loud and upbeat to get my blood going. I love hardcore metal and bumping techno to be quite honest with you.
What is the most embarrassing thing you have ever done?
I farted in an elevator full of beautiful women. I am lucky because they thought it was one of them and not me which I thought that was hilarious.
You’re a new addition to the crayon box. What colour would you be and why?
I have noticed in the TV and film industry it is kind of classic throughout the course of time that the villain always wears black. So being a nasty villain like Captain Nixon in the upcoming movie, A Sense of Purpose Fighting For Our Lives, I will have to say the black crayon would suit me just fine.
What were you like in high school?
In high school I was a humble guy who played baseball and went to 4 proms. I have some sweet memories from those days.
What was the last thing you watched on TV?
The last thing I watch on TV was the movie, Goosebumps with Jack Black with my three children. I love Jack Black in that movie
I have to say a massive thanks to John for taking time out of his busy schedule to answer these questions.
Please show him your support.
Just a quick post to let you all know that I will be interviewing the fabulous John Quinlan again in September, I know he has some pretty exciting things happening in his life at the minute and I can’t wait to share with you all, but until then here’s a truly gorgeous picture of my wonderful friend for you to enjoy 😉
Many of you will know that I found inspiration for my bad guy Benito in pictures of John Quinlan and since I’m back to working on the follow up to Aphrodite’s Fire I thought I would tell you all a little bit about how that came about and share some of the pictures that inspired bad boy Benito as well as a picture that I happen to know is one of John’s personal favourites.
Back in May 2014 I saw pictures on Facebook of John at a convention with one of my favourite authors, Debra Anastasia and me being me I sent a cheeky friend request never expecting him to accept. However, much to my delight the request was excepted and that was that, or so I thought 😉
After requesting a spot at Second City Signing I had a bit of a panic when I realised I was going to have to stop messing about and actually get a book written and published. So after sending a short story, which became chapter one, to my good friend AF was born and I found myself trawling the interweb looking for inspiration. On that day a picture of John appeared on my Facebook timeline and that was it.
At the time Benito did not exist at all but the second I saw the picture I knew his name and everything about him, little did I realise he was going to become such a strong and powerful voice in my head. Now I feel I need to add that at the time I hadn’t spoken to John at all, yes I’d liked a few posts and commented on a couple but I didn’t know much about him apart from he was super massively hot *blushes*. That was until I got challenged to do the five day, hottie a day challenge. I tagged John in my challenge explaining that he was the inspiration for Benito, again not expecting a response but that was the day I made a real friend and the day I began to know John a bit better.
John is one of the nicest, most inspirational guys I have had the pleasure of interacting with, so much so that sometimes I feel a bit bad about connecting him to Benito as if I’m honest Benito is the absolute polar opposite of John.
John has supported me from that day, not only with my book but also with normal day to day stuff. I’ve never actually told John but he inspires me to push myself not only with work but also with pushing myself to become healthier and fitter, he is one of the hardest working guys I know yet he was willing to take time out to help a nobody (me).
Recently he shared this pic with me as it is one of his personal favourites and let’s face it, it’s a stunning picture…
I told him I would share it but not long after I said that I began to struggle with some crap in my life which left me in a bad place, a place where I couldn’t seem to write a bloody thing and I was just about functioning as a person. Typically for me I found myself spiralling downward quickly, not only because of how I was feeling but also because I felt I was letting John down, but when I explained what was happening he was totally compassionate and understanding, for he is a true gentleman and a real good friend.
Anyhow this post is my way of thanking John for his friendship, support and inspiration. Who would have thought that pressing the friend request button would lead to me finding a true friend with a huge heart of gold.
Thank you John, from the bottom of my heart.
P.P.S There is much more to come from Benito so I guess I will be staring at these pictures much, much more…it’s a hard job but somebody has to do it lol 😉
I first came across John Quinlan whilst stalking my fellow author Debra Anastasia. As soon as I saw him I was drawn to how he looked and so when I sat down to write Aphrodite’s Fire I knew instantly who would be the inspiration for my bad guy, Benito. After releasing the book I happened to tag John in a photo comment on Facebook and we began talking. Thankfully John is nothing at all like Benito, John is a truly lovely guy with a heart of gold. During a post Birmingham signing chat with John he agreed to be my very first interviewee (brave man lol) and this post is the result, enjoy…
John Quinlan (born John Joseph Quinlan October 30, 1974) in Winchester, Massachusetts, is a former American bodybuilder and professional wrestler who now works as a fitness model, fashion model, art model, and romance cover model. He is also a male underwear model. Quinlan has appeared in a variety of publications, including World Physique and Planet Muscle Magazine. Quinlan has appeared in gym video shoots and his image has been used online in many features and interviews. Quinlan has been referred to as the most tattooed male romance cover model in the world. In May 2013, John appeared as a newly featured Cover Model at the Romantic Times (RT) Convention in Kansas City, MO. John has since been featured on many book covers since his introduction to the world of Romance Novel Cover Modelling. In May 2015, Quinlan was a featured cover model at the RT Book Lovers Convention in Dallas, Texas.
S.J – Hi John, thank you for agreeing to do this, as you know this is a huge step outside my comfort zone so lets just jump right in with the first question. What drew you to male physique modelling and when did you know this was the right career for you?
J – had always been involved with fitness and modeling over the years so this was an extension of that. When I look back on my life years from now it will be great to say I did some pretty cool things as a result of hard work I put into my body.
S.J – Well all that hard work has definitely been worth it in my opinion 😉 Ok I’m not going to lie I’m pretty nervous about asking this next question, I’ve seen your Playgirl shots, but here goes… What runs through your mind whilst you are taking part in photo shoots?
J – SJ, it all depends on the type of shoot. If it’s more a physique and body shoot I have to concentrate a bit more on holding the right poses and taking my time a bit more to conserve energy. Those type of shoots require holding the poses and in very hot weather they can definitely wear a guy out. The ideal shoot is more of a fashion themed shoot in either a studio or outdoors where the temperature is just right wearing a jacket or top with jeans and doesn’t require the constant holding of poses like the kind I just mentioned.
J – I am always honoured when my image inspires a book character. I always try and give it my best because if any great author out there, such as yourself SJ, creates a character for his/her book based on John Quinlan it is special to me. The way I see it, if an author takes the time to base a character on my they should get my best to bring out the best in the character.
S.J – Aww you’ve just made me blush! Thank you John… Who has been the biggest influence in your life?
J – I don’t think at this point I can say one individual person as so many people have influenced me along my journey. So many people from around the world have shown me so much love and support that I just want to thank all those now for doing that. They really gave me strength and allowed me to continue and really feel good about what I was doing.
S.J – This question is from my little girl, Megan. Do you like to read and if so what type of books do you enjoy reading?
J – Well Megan this is a great question, I do love reading autobiographies because they allow me to get inside a person’s head and see how they went about being successful throughout their journey in whatever field they happened to be in. I love reading about the rags to riches stories about actors like Sylvester Stallone who was so poor he had to sell his dog because he couldn’t afford to feed him only to later on buy the dog back after the movie Rocky, which he wrote, took off. Truly inspiring to say the least.
S.J – Thank you for answering Meg’s question. On a similar theme what do you do to relax after a long day working out/shooting?
J – One thing is for sure, I rest! Shoots can really zap your energy, especially the ones in high heat or the workouts that were cardio based that day. Nothing feels better than an air conditioned room or even my car with the AC cranked up after a challenging shoot or workout. Just give me some water and a cool room to relax in after one of these adventures and I’m happy. Yes SJ, I might very well also fall asleep but I can fall asleep knowing I just gave it my best so I earned it.
S.J – Whilst we are talking about work, what piece of advice would you give to someone who was looking to step into the modelling world?
J – Be open minded and realize that success doesn’t come over night. Be open to constructive criticism as there is plenty of that which will be thrown your way as a model. Use what other people tell you to become better and take what they say as the tools which will keep you moving in the right direction towards success. Be consistant and never give up. Keep your goals fresh in your mind at all times because like I always say, “If you believe it, you can achieve it.”
S.J – If you could only choose six words to describe you, what would they be?
J – Focused, Driven, Caring, Emotional, Intense, Dependable
S.J – Finally, what does the future hold for you?
J – Only God knows that SJ, but I was selected by producer Jillian Bullock for a role in her 2016 film, ‘A Sense of Purpose: Fighting for Our Lives’ in Philadelphia. I play the role of Army Captain Nixon. Making the transition into acting is very exciting for me and I look forward to make a career out of this in the near future.
S.J – Oh wow that sounds good, I shall have to keep an eye out for the film and go see it on release. Well that’s it, thank you so much John for taking time out to chat with me and for agreeing to be my interview guinea pig 😉
J – SJ, thanks so much for interviewing me today. I was honoured to sit down here with such an amazing author as yourself. Much love & respect for you always.
S.J – Much love back to you John.
